Women of Strength Photo Project

About This Project

The “Women of Strength” Photography Project came to life in 2015 after a single portrait was made of a young, professional woman from Manchester, New Hampshire. Her story was inspiring. It would start in Africa in 1990, and take her and her family from Sudan to the United States to seek a better life. She is a fighter and continues to make a difference today.

The vision is to photograph and interview 12 women in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts and north into southern New Hampshire, who have, in their personal or professional lives, achieved something extraordinary, greater than themselves, given back to the community, and who have improved and paved the way for other women in all walks of life and professions.

The goal is to combine interview quotes with large, framed, black and white environmental portraits for a traveling show. The shows will be hosted by and at organizations represented by both men and women, women’s organizations, women-run businesses, public libraries, art galleries, and larger venues at university and corporate settings. Both phase 1 and 2 will produce six images each, with separate funding events for each phase.

There is a follow-up project planned to fund a coffee table book of the photographs from this first project and include additional images, and full interviews with the women. The initial project (in two phases) is to produce 12 images and personal stories over the next 12 months for show openings and public discussions planned for 2018.

Mission

The purpose of the project is to highlight these women, tell their stories, and create discussions from the photographic images and text, which aims to inspire women of all ages to become leaders in their own lives. With the show traveling to women-focused and other organizations, the show may be used as a fundraising activity by showing the artwork and sharing the women's stories.

Our Plan of Action

We are fundraising in a two-phased approach in order that we establish a credible track record for phase 2. Phase 1 is to raise enough money to provide for 6 of the 12 framed images and written biographies. Once we have funding to show off one of the 6 images, we will use that to demonstrate the success for more funding from public, private and corporate donors.

Funding

This project is not considered a non-profit venture, but will require private and public funding to be accomplished. We are in the process of completing a budget and seeking funding sources through sponsors, corporate donations, starting with a Kickstarter campaign in January.
