More about Woodson Branch Nature School

With the generous support of donors, a deep pool of invested volunteers, and a clear demand for an earth and arts based learning environment for the children of this region, we opened our second location as an elementary and middle grades school in September of 2016 -- the Woodson Branch Nature School (WBNS). We offer full day curriculum and enrichment options. The participants in our programs have access to an abundant 30 acres in rural Madison County, complete with rolling hills, a well-established blueberry orchard, apple trees, pasture, two indoor classrooms, an 1800 sq. ft. 2-story tobacco barn, plus 20 acres of pristine forest with trails, three creeks, and multiple waterfalls that serve as the property border to the National Forest.

We provide elementary and middle grade with multiple leveled groups for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and two grouping for our Mindfulness Forestry Program and weekly “Specials” including: Science, Physical Education, Horticulture/Agriculture, Art, and Handwork. Additionally, we provide an Enrichment Program (after the school day) offering a Building & Engineering Club, Traditional Arts Club, Theater Arts Club, and Farm & Forest Science Club. We currently serve 38 total students in the full day program, and 24 in the Enrichment Program. At least 75% of our students are from low-income families. Each year, as the next buildings are constructed per the master conceptual plan, the program will add another grade to be offered through 12th grade, and another teacher for every 8 students.

Within their grade groups teaching staff rotate leading thoughtfully-crafted experiential lessons, discussions, and research activities. With less than a 1:8 ratio, students get plenty of direct attention and teachers are able to assess and address their individual needs. The support staff provides documentation of the projects and tags the photos and videos, adding anecdotal notes. They get a close up view of the students in progress in all subjects and are therefore part of the planning team as well.

We are still accepting applications / resumes for employment for our professional teaching staff.
