More about Higgins Hog Roast

The annual Higgins Hog Roast is an event that was first inspired by Phil Detrixhe and Trevor Pool. It was a tradition for friends and family to hunt wild hogs and have a pit barbeque. It was a small group gathering to begin with. In 2009, the younger generation took it upon themselves to continue the tradition. In light of tragic events, the group thought it was a wonderful idea to have a hog roast to benefit two very special families. The first Higgins Hog Roast was to honor Joshua Habekott. The community lost Josh in a tragic automobile accident at the early age of 21. A few years later, the tight knit group lost Jeremy Parker to leukemia at the age of 27. That year, the committee decided to give the proceeds of the Higgins Hog Roast to the family of Jeremy for medical expenses. The following year, the Higgins Hog Roast committee decided to donate to the Joshua Habekott Scholarship fund and CaringBridge in memory of Jeremy Parker. The Joshua Habekott Scholarship fund is a scholarship for a Higgins ISD senior. The CaringBridge website allows people to easily get updates and offer support and encouragement to those battling illnesses. This website was a great way for family and friends to connect with Jeremy and his family during his battle with leukemia.
The Higgins Hog Roast has grown to include not only great barbeque but excellent bands and entertainment. As the attendance of the donation-only event has grown, the Higgins Hog Roast committee has been able to fund two scholarships. One recipient of the Higgins Hog Roast Scholarship will be a senior from Higgins High School in memory of Joshua Habekott and one recipient of the Higgins Hog Roast Scholarship will be a senior from Arnett High School in memory of Jeremy Parker. The event not only funds these two scholarships, but is able to donate to various school and community organizations in the surrounding area. The committee is able to help the community and surrounding communities by family and business donations. In addition, the Higgins Hog Roast has an annual hog hunt and raffle.
The Higgins Hog Roast has grown into a benefit that Josh and Jeremy would be proud of. The committee feels that this is a way of keeping Josh and Jeremy’s memory alive. The Higgins Hog Roast committee would like to bestow our eternal gratitude to all personal donators as well as the businesses that make our event possible. This year’s family friendly event will be in Higgins, TX in the city park on June 6th. For more information please contact a Higgins Hog Roast Committee member or send us a message on our page.
