Its Yes Time

YES is a word that drives connection, empathy, and accountability. Yes, I made a mistake. Yes, I love you. Yes, you need to go to your room. Most anything that can be said with a “NO” undertone can be translated to a positive comment. In fact, research is showing that emotion affects learning and relationships more so than short-term behaviors!

Connection and attachment are what drives behavioral change! YES creates a connection.

Examples of Yes language:
► The child breaks something they knew to not play with:
No language “I told you not to play with that! Now you’re in trouble!”
Yes language “Wow that was an interesting decision. This will be a great learning experience for you.” Yes language still means we have boundaries and discipline.
► Teen comes home late:
No language: “What were you thinking?! You’re grounded for breaking curfew.”
Yes language: “This will be a great opportunity for you to learn to follow the curfew.”
► Teen gets caught drinking:
No Language “Have we not taught you better? How could you violate our trust!”
Yes language: “Thank you for giving us the opportunity to rebuild confidence and help you through this. We love you.”
► A child comes home feeling Teased and Bullied:
No language “Suck it up and be tough!”
Yes language “That must really hurt inside. We love you. Let’s find a solution together.”
► The child loses a game and is unhappy:
No language “Ahhh, I'm sorry. Better luck next time. You are all winners.”
Yes language: “Yes, sometimes we lose. That is not easy. What can we do now to move forward?”

So often we placate and use NO language as a copout to reality. YES is about embracing reality with love, validation, empathy and a drive to move forward.
