Matthews Fire & EMS protects roughly 14.2 square miles and 27,000 residents along with other mutual aid agreements. Matthews is a combination department consisting of 15 career members and about 70 volunteers. The career staff operates from 6am-6pm Monday thru Friday accompanied by volunteers while nights and weekends are covered exclusively by volunteers.
Matthews responds to approximately 3,000 calls out of two stations.
Station 1 consists of the following trucks; ladder, engine brush, heavy rescue, squad (EMS).
Station 2 consists of two engines, a squad and a rehab unit.
Matthews is always looking for good volunteer firefighters and EMTs. Volunteers are required to run 36 shift hours per month. Volunteers have many benefits such as;
• Always supplied with the best equipment to maintain safety
• Training in and out of house are paid for
• A small monetary stipend every shift for certified members
• Meals up to $15/per 12 hour shift are reimbursed
• $10 gas gift cards per 12/hour shift
• After 1 year of service and NC FF certification members receive a pair of leather boots. After 3 years of NC FF certification they receive a leather helmet and after 3 years and Technical rescuer they receive a Littman stethoscope

Matthews also offers great community programs like the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT, http://www.fema.gov/community-emergency-response-teams) and an explorer program for our members ranging from 14-18 years old.
