Micanopy Tutoring

Using one-on-one tutoring to complete daily homework, we ensure that each child is prepared for school the next day. We spend up to 4 hours with each child so that he or she understands the lesson thoroughly and thereby cover any remedial work that is necessary. Regular attendance is required to remain in the program.

The tutors at Micanopy Tutoring are University of Florida students with Federal Work Study grants as well as University and local volunteers. Under the terms of the Federal Work Study program, our program contributes 25% of each University of Florida tutors salary and the remaining 75% comes from the Federal Work Study program.

The tutoring program operates on a streamlined budget. The administrative staff are all volunteers and the only other paid employee is the Program Director. Other than insurance and required permits, we have no administrative overhead costs.

Our program offers tutoring over the summer because at risk children can lose up to a grade level of knowledge over this time. To prevent this we offer tutoring for 3 hours each day, 4 days a week, throughout the entire summer. In addition to standard grade level material, we use this time to develop a love for reading. Tutoring offers a free lunch each day in the summer because hunger is a significant problem in the local community.
