More about Spicewood & Highland Lakes Lions Club

Chartered in 2009, the Spicewood Lions Club has made a very big impact on the local community. Through our fundraising activities we raise money which we donate to Spicewood’s local community services organizations.

Our club holds the motto “We Serve” close to our hearts. In that spirit, our club members make themselves available to the local community. As volunteers, we have helped the Spicewood VFD/EMS, the Spicewood Community Center and the Spicewood Arts Society with their annual fundraisers by helping with “day of” activities. We help the Spicewood Elementary School’s PTO with their annual Halloween “Trunk or Treat” by manning booths, running hayrides and passing out candy and treats to their ghouls and goblins. At Christmas we adopt a family in need through Helping Hand Crisis Ministry. We provided donations and many volunteers to the 2011 Spicewood Fire Relief.

Taking the “We Serve” motto further, our club adopts a two-mile stretch of Highway 71 just west of Spicewood. In holding to the Lion’s tradition of vision care and awareness, we support the Central Texas Lions Kidsight Program to help identify and correct children’s vision problems. We also help those that cannot afford it to obtain eye tests and prescription spectacles, and we collect eyeglasses for recycling.

To fulfill our obligation to Lions outside of Spicewood, we take an active role in Texas Lions camp by participating in their Springtime Camp Clean-up. And we don’t just show up, we post! Our team arrives with the necessary tools and expertise to accomplish the tasks presented to us. We also sponsor children at no cost for the camp. We also cook food for guests of the Ronald MacDonald House in Austin.

In order to be more visible, our club started two events for the enjoyment of the community. In 2009, we launched Spicewood’s inaugural 4th of July parade through the heart of Spicewood. The parade participants include the Spicewood VFD/EMS, County Officials, Civic Organizations, dogs, kids and classic cars. The parade finishes at the Community Center where we serve hot dogs and cold drinks to all members of the community and enjoy a presentation from veterans and local musicians.

The second event is our signature fund raiser, affectionately called the Spicewood Buzzard Bump. This is a full day, family festival that features live music, a car show, washer tournament, bird cook-off, children’s carnival, food and merchandise vendors. We also include all of our local community organizations and award a Local Hero from the community the coveted honor of Saluting Buzzard Award.
