More about Therapeutic Horsemanship of El Paso

What is Therapeutic Horseback Riding?:
Therapeutic riding uses equine-oriented activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the physical and emotional well being of people with disabilities. Horseback riding for the disabled originated in Europe in the 1950's and by 1960 North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) was formed to promote equine activities for individuals with disabilities.

Horseback riding offers therapy as well as recreation for the disabled student. A wide range of physical, mental and emotional impairments, as well as learning disabilities can be served through horseback riding. The therapy derived from horseback riding is most beneficial. Individuals involved in such programs may experience increased muscular coordination, strength and balance along with improved self discipline, confidence and life skills.

The purpose of our program is to create opportunities for therapeutic benefits by providing the student with a horseback riding experience as a recreational modality. Also, it is intended that riding will enhance personal skill development (both mentally and physically) and extend an appreciation and understanding of horses.

A horse's walking gait mimics your body action. Sitting astride a horse, a person must move their trunk, arms, shoulders, head and the rest of their body in order to maintain balance. Only a live creature can make this happen. A horse can encourage your body to respond in a smooth, rhythmic manner.
