Circa 1829, the Inn was named after Matilda J. Pierce, who lived in the house and at the age of fifteen, witnessed the battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Twenty-five years later, she wrote a book called "At Gettysburg, Or What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle" recounting her experiences of the battle.
