What is the Vaad of Louisville? Well, we were founded over a century ago by German and Eastern European immigrants in downtown Louisville. In the early 20th century the Vaad was a central authority in the Louisville Jewish community, overseeing spiritual, material and ritual Jewish life. However, over the 20th century those responsibilities shifted to each individual synagogue.
The VAAD has always been dedicated to promoting Jewish life in Louisville. Now we are undertaking a new role to become a local resource for the entire community; to connect with local business, well sourced and locally made kosher food and programs that add to the community. For us, Kashrut is not only about food traditions, but also about intentional living, where our lifestyles need to take social, environmental and moral factors into consideration.
