Grinders
The sandwich named grinder also earned its name from men working in shipyards. During the second world war, the first grinder sandwiches were found in the shipbuilding yards of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Local Italian vendors near the shipyards assembled large sandwiches for the men who worked on iron and steel. These men were nicknamed grinders since their jobs entail grinding and installing steel rivets. Their favorite sandwich earned the same nickname!
